Good Jokes for the Groom’s Wedding Speech

by Groom Wedding Speech on November 5, 2009

There are good and bad choices when it comes to including jokes in your wedding speech. By knowing the difference you can avoid any social faux pas and potentially upsetting moments for your bride or family members.

It isn’t expected that you’ll stand up and transform into a world-class comedian or public speaker, but adding a bit of humor to what is generally considered to be a simple and sincere speech can lighten the atmosphere and put you at ease with your guests.

Practice your jokes and speech in its entirety so that you’re comfortable with the content. You don’t want to include one sweet joke just to ruin the punch line by fumbling with your words. Know what’s coming and in what order.

Prearranged jokes can be quite amusing for the guests. If you’ve got a fairly forgiving, younger audience or those who don’t mind a bit of risqué humor, a commonly found but nonetheless funny joke to perform is the request for all the chastity belt keys. You’ve prearranged this and you can either just have the father of the bride present it to you – perhaps even in his speech – or if your audience is suitable, you can have various members of the audience and bridal party stand up and bring them to you. This is sure to get a laugh but you’ll want to check your bride is OK with it first, or you may find yourself locked out.

Most of all you need to make sure that your jokes are appropriate. This is the number one rule if you want a funny wedding speech. Tailor your speech to suit the venue, the guests and the parents. What you might have said at your engagement party won’t necessarily work in a wedding. The more formal, the less likely people will be to expect anything humorous at all so be careful with your chosen words and aim to pepper some content for laughs amongst plenty of sincerity and romantic words for your bride.
