Come Up With Funny Groom Speeches Easily!

by Groom Wedding Speech on October 26, 2009

Writing a funny wedding speech is often high on the list for a groom to be. You need to consider your audience. Will they be receptive or offended? What might be funny to you and your friends, and even your bride may not go down quite well if half your guests are conservative distant family members, and the last thing you want is a phone call the next day advising you that the family has cut you off.

If your circumstances truly suit a funny wedding speech there are a few things to keep in mind when writing. First of all, if you can try out your material – this is why you have a best man. Then try it out on the bridesmaids – just to get a female perspective.

Look for jokes that you might have thought appropriate for certain times in your relationship, or funny anecdotes. If your bride is unlikely to kick you out of the matrimonial bed that night, then choose something mildly embarrassing if it’s extremely hilarious, but don’t embarrass just for the sake of it. Even better for all concerned, embarrass yourself! A bit of self-depreciation is always welcome in a wedding speech.

It is important to add a bit of sincerity to your speech. While guests will enjoy laughing with you at your experiences getting to this day, they will also expect that you’ll finish off with something heartfelt and romantic, so don’t think a few jokes will see you through. Try to write a few words that cover the basics – thanking guests and bridal party as well as comment on your bride and how she’s looking. While avoiding the soppy stuff is easy enough for the bulk of the speech you need to have something in there to remind people they are at a wedding, not a bucks night!
