Top 5 Mistakes and No-No’s For Wedding Speeches

by Groom Wedding Speech on November 19, 2009

There are some things you just cannot get away with in a wedding speech regardless of your background, guests and comfort levels. These are the top ten mistakes in groom’s wedding speeches that you should avoid at all costs.

1. Don’t drink too much

This might sound obvious but as the dinner progresses and nerves build it can be difficult to build up the courage to make your speech, potentially in front of 100 or more guests. Just remember that most of them are likely to be related to one of you. No one expects a comedy routine or a romantic movie ending. This is real life. Keep your drinking down so you can say your words clearly and avoid embarrassment.

2. Don’t offend the in-laws

Your in laws are now family for life. However you are not yet at the point where you can be offensive to them and expect forgiveness. Don’t say anything disrespectful, and don’t make them or your bride think that the marriage is a mistake.

3.Don’t talk about sex

While it might be ok between your bride and yourself, or even with friends, your great grandmother does not want to know about your sex life. More conservative members of the crowd may expect that you haven’t experienced it yet, and it should be a no-go zone in your wedding speech.

4. Don’t ignore your guests

You should always thank your guests for coming. There is every chance that they have bought you a very nice gift, found a new outfit or for some they may have travelled quite a distance. Keep this in mind and thank them for it.

5. Don’t use unfamiliar language

If you’re likely to feel nervous, you don’t want to find yourself complicating the process by using words and phrases that are unfamiliar. Keep it natural but avoid swearing.

When it comes to writing a groom’s wedding speech, keeping these tips in mind will help you to present a solid speech that is appreciated. Your effort will be applauded and you won’t need to spend the next decade making up for offensive comments at your wedding.
